PDAs
Mobility handheld products such as the cell phone and the PDA (Personal Digital Assistant)
have become a powerful tool in day-to-day business. Although the choice of handheld devices
is increasing all the time, the following main operating systems exist in today’s market:
- Palm OS - by Palm
- Windows CE/Pocket PC 2003 - by Microsoft
- Blackberry - by Research In Motion (RIM)
- EPOC - by Symbian
- Linux - an Open Source Operating System
Personal digital assistants are capable of connecting to the Internet or to in-house networks are expected to drive an annual growth rate of 8 percent through 2008 according to Allied Business and some other research firms.
In five years, Allied Business Intelligence expects the overall PDA market to grow to $10 billion, with a major portion of that revenue derived from connected PDAs. By 2006, the analyst firm said, connected handheld devices would represent 50 percent of the total PDA market.
ABI's predictions run counter to other research expecting an overall decline in the overall PDA market. The research firm, however, believes sales will be driven by new PDA designs and emerging technology applications, including telematics, satellite location, barcode scanning, tracking of radio-frequency identification tags and digital photography.
